I have found out that there are a lot of children at my church and in my neighborhood who just love us and want to be around us. Showing them love and sharing our lives with them makes them sort of substitute grandchildren. Keeps us young in body and heart as well.
Raising my son alone (with Papa carrying us), I always thought churches should have "Adopt Grandparents" or "Adopt A Grandparent" ministry.

Now that's a great idea!

My church has a mentoring program where "mature" adults take one or more children - grade school to teens and mentor them in their lives. While we provide Biblical help to them, we also help them in whatever area(s) in their lives that they need. We need to win our young people to the Lord and then help them, guide them, be a friend to them, so that they stay strong in Christ and when they leave home, either for college or something else, they have a strong foundation they can stand on. And we continue to help them, if they need it, even after that. It's a great discipleship program.

Carl, it's great that those kids get so much support and discipleship.

Hi Cathy and Doreen,
so good to see you here
My children are grown, my daughter is still living with us and my son who was married divorced and remarried lives 2 miles away. I have three grandchildren coming around on a regular basis, sometimes that is good, sometimes very tiring. They are 5, 18 months, and 3 months.

Judy,
Their are usually children in church or even in school who are hungry for a grandparent. Even if their isn't a formal program, kids will gravitate to you if you are open to it. In my old church we had a lady that all the kids called Grandma Cora, they adopted her and she adopted them. Keep yourself open to something like that.

I agree with you, I don't think I have ever read a book where I just couldn't stop reading it, even bed time I have to force myself to put it down
